Research Proposal on Ethics and Sports

1. Title 2.Abstract Being a student-athlete or a professional athlete you are automatically nominated as a leader and depending on your skill level is thrust into society to behave as so. Athletes have such a big influence on society because other individuals look up to their athletic performance and role and so their behaviors are closely monitored and mimicked by those aspiring to be like them or those that admire their roles throughout society and hold a pure enjoyment for sports. When an athlete displays wrong behaviors knowing they are jeopardizing their ability to participate in athletics then that is where the problem becomes relevant. Questions concerning consequences and how an athlete’s ethical intentions are influenced by the ethical standards set in place. This paper will investigate what influences an athlete to participate in unethical behaviors that could result in the loss of their athletic eligibility. 3.Rationale/Problem Statement: Explain your topic. Make a case for why this topic is important to you or your specialization area, etc. State your Research Problem. The topic area I chose to discuss is ethics and sports. This topic is important to me because I feel like it is something that should be discussed that a lot of professionals, the youth and adolescent student-athletes tend to ignore. Being a student-athlete or a professional athlete you are automatically nominated as a leader and held at a higher standard than your peers. Athletes have such a big influence on the individuals around them and people that they come into contact with. When an athlete does something wrong it shouldn’t be swept under the rug and all athletes should be held to the same standards. There are a lot of behaviors that get swept under the rug for athletes, such as failing drug tests and not passing classes, that they get perceived from the athlete and other athletes as acceptable behavior when it really isn’t okay at all. This topic is also important to the area of sports psychology because it will bring attention to the matter and therefore hold administrators responsible for holding all athletes to the same standard. The part of the topic of sports and ethics that I am most interested in is the policies already set in place to deal with misconduct with athletes and the consequences. I believe that is important to review and consider because as any policy there are holes within them that need to be plugged and revisions that could possibly be made to make the ethics better and applicable to all athletes. In this topic of sports and ethics, I intend to study unethical behaviors of athletes during competition and in their lives outside of competition. The intention of this research is to analyze and evaluate the role of ethics influence on the behaviors of athletes and those that facilitate those ethics. By engaging in qualitative research it will allow the athletes and administrators to be observed in their natural settings. Qualitative research would be used to gain a better insight and understanding of reasons why athletes aren’t held to the same standard and t would be most beneficial in finding a solution or making the situation better to where athletes will be held to that. 4.Research Questions: Conclude your discussion of your research topic by identifying specific research question(s) and possibly sub-questions. 5.Literature Review: a minimum of 8 pages on 5-7 articles or edited book chapters, plus at least two dissertations: Your literature review should justify your study. Information should be drawn from appropriate sources, such as professional journals, books, and dissertations. Information gathered from literature sources must be appropriately cited, following APA guidelines. Provide a synthesized literature review on your topic making the case for why this study will add knowledge that will “fill a hole in the literature.” 6.Research Methodology: Describe what research methodology you are proposing to answer your research questions and why it is an appropriate method. In addition, include the following as a description of your research plan: ◦Participant Selection:
If applicable, describe the site of the data collection. Explain who your participants will be and what method you will use to select them. Be as specific as possible as if you were giving directions to someone on how to choose and obtain the participants. Include instructions on how to get informed consent from the participants. ◦Data Collection: Discuss how you will collect the data (interviews, observations, documents, etc.). Tell what sort of questions you will ask (for interviews) or what you will look for (for observations) and why that will help you answer your research questions. Include the interview protocol (if applicable) including how to conduct interviews for your study and what questions will be asked in an Appendix. ◦Data Analysis: Provide a description of how you plan to code and/or analyze the data. 7.Methods of achieving validity: No research project is perfect. But how are you assuring that your study is as valid as possible? 8.Potential Ethical Problems: Could your participants be harmed by your research, either in carrying it out or affecting society after it is finished? Who are the audiences for your research, and do they have "objective" concerns for the practical implications and policy recommendations that you make? Address these and other possibly relevant questions of ethics. 9.Limitations: No research covers everything. What are the obvious limitations to your study? What will not be “proven” though your study? 10.References Page: The references page should be formatted according to APA style. 11.Appendix of your data collection protocol
